Here’s a list of fun video chat activities for kids that you can engage in physically and mentally with your friends through video chat. These video chat activities are easy to host for adults and kids can even have a turn by themselves.

Brain Games

Guess the colour!

  • List 5-10 objects that are the same colour
  • Children try to guess the colour & take turns

Guess the shape!

  • List 5-10 objects that are the same shape
  • Children try to guess the shape & take turns
  • Can use PowerPoint

Guess the wrong word!

  • Popular nursery rhymes, but change 1 word
  • e.g. twinkle twinkle little gem how I wonder what you are

Land, Water, Sky

  • Host (or child) picks a place (e.g. sea, farm, zoo, safari) and children have to take turns to say an animal that lives there
  • CHALLENGE: take turns, and each child must say a different animal (no repeats)

21 Questions Character Game

  • Pick a child to think of a character
  • Other children to ask 21 questions to see if they can guess the character
  • CHALLENGE: only yes-no questions

I am Thinking Of

  • Host/child picks a place, thing, animal, person etc. and uses 2-3 sentences to describe what they’re thinking
  • Children take turns to guess and can ask 1 yes or no question
  • The first child to guess wins!

I Spy with My Little Eye

  • How good is your eyesight? A quick game of I spy to let kids test their observation skills.
  • Play I spy with objects on your screen

Pictionary

  • Can play Pictionary using Zoom’s whiteboard function
  • CHALLENGE: split into 2 teams with one person from each team drawing, the first team to guess the picture wins!
  • TIP: can use a word generator

Name That Tune

  • Test their knowledge of songs with this game of tunes. 
  • Hum/whistle/play a tune without lyrics and see if others can guess the song
  • Speak the lyrics (no tune) and see if others can guess

Physical Games

Statues

  • In this game, children are to be as still as a statue. 
  • Children are to pick a topic (e.g. superheroes, jobs, animals, facial expressions etc.) and strike a pose
  • If they move they’re out
  • The host is to turn around, each time they turn around children must change their pose

Musical Chairs Charades Edition

  • This musical activity will test kids reaction time and creativity in stopping and striking a pose.
  • Play some music and get the kids to move around on the spot
  • Once the music stops, kids must freeze
  • CHALLENGE: pick a topic (shapes, animals, superheroes etc.) and kids must freeze a pose

Simon Says

  • Test children’s listening abilities and response times with a game of Simon says.
  • Only do the action if host/child says “Simon says” before the action
  • Kids must do the action quickly, if they are too slow they are out 
  • CHALLENGE: do the opposite of whatever Simon says
  • e.g. wiggle your left thumb = wriggle right thumb, stand = sit down

Charades

  • This fun and physical activity lets kids show off their creativity 
  • Pick a topic (e.g. movies, animals, occupations etc.) and act it out
  • Kids are to guess what/who you are
  • TIP: can use a charades generator

Storybook/telling

  • Storytime makes for a good, quiet downtime for kids to just sit back and listen.
  • Children can share stories
  • The host can read a story to the kids
  • TIP: can use an online book so the pages are HD

Collaborative Storytelling

  • Kids can work on their creativity while having fun with their friends.
  • Start with a simple plot (e.g. a bunny and a spider went to the grocery store)
  • Unmute 1 child at a time
  • Each child says 1 sentence
  • TIP: some children might need prompts, host can ask: ‘what did they see,’ ‘what did they say’ etc.

Show & Tell/Treasure Box

  • Kids can learn how to present and show off their favourite items. 
  • Each child can bring a box filled with things they treasure (e.g. books, games, toys, jewellery etc.)
  • Host can start first

Colour Hunt:

  • Put on your hunting hats and get ready for colours to fly! This hunt for colours engages kids physically and tests their ‘out-of-the-box thinking.’
  • Host can pick a colour and the children are given 5 minutes to find something in their house of that colour
  • Children take turns to show what they found

Scavenger Hunt

  • Get moving with an exciting scavenger hunt for items in your house! 
  • Have a list of things for children to find
  • Set a time limit 
  • The kid who finds the most things wins!
  • e.g. something sweet, something red, something to eat with, something to play with etc.
