How to get kids interested in STEM?

In the world of globalisation, STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) education has become an important concern. Knowledge in STEM is important because the number of STEM jobs is growing significantly faster than non-STEM jobs, and is projected to increase by 10.8% by 2023 (Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics 2018). As technology continues to emerge, current jobs become obsolete and new jobs are created. A career in STEM is not restricted to a few areas but has many possibilities, which allows everyone to have the chance to potentially change the world we live in.

Exposing children at a young age to STEM education will prepare them to pursue a career in related fields, and spark their interest in lifelong learning. STEM education can also allow children to develop valuable skill sets such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. These skills are important in our everyday lives, no matter the career path. Many schools are starting to integrate STEM into the curriculum, allowing students to explore the countless opportunities offered to them in the future.

How to make science interesting for kids

So how can you make science interesting for kids? As children are curious, they often question everything that happens. As a result, parents can integrate fun games into everyday lives to let them learn. Children naturally learn through play. Parents can further encourage this by opening up opportunities for them to explore and have fun. Simple activities such as counting or colouring can allow young children to learn about basic maths or how different colours mix.

Some of the ways in which we can get children interested in STEM are:

  • Science-themed movies and TV shows. As children enjoy watching them, why not combine both education and entertainment? It is a great way of inspiring kids to develop an interest in science and ignite their curiosity. Here are some lists of movies, and TV shows

Though science can seem intimidating at times, it is beneficial to get kids started early. Kids learn a lot from their surroundings too. Allowing them to get started early will enhance their problem-solving skills and build good foundational skills in preparation for school.

STEM educational toys to get kids interested

Educational toys are quite useful in getting kids interested in STEM because children love learning while having fun. They provide the opportunity for kids to have fun and also stimulate learning as they are dynamic and allow kids to be hands-on. There are toys suitable for all different ages that can help children develop different skill sets.

Toys are one of the easiest ways to get children interested in STEM. Every child loves to have fun, and toys can keep them occupied for long periods of time. STEM toys can develop creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, which can enhance their learning experience later in school and life. No matter the career path, these are essential skills that everyone should have.

Keep in mind that STEM toys do not have to be expensive – simple activities such as puzzles, building blocks, magnetic construction kits, etc. are all activities that kids can play with to develop logical and critical thinking skills. DIY activities can also be found on Pinterest, which is another fun way to teach children while also having fun with them.
