Stand-up Robo

This image of a joke-telling robot performing a stand-up comedy routine in London has won the overall prize in a national science photography competition organised by The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in UK.
The show called Comedy Lab: Human vs Robo was part of a study by Toby Harris, a PhD student.

The artwork known as ‘Crystal waves’ showcases geology and art, through its undulating patterns. Smashing, squeezing, and shearing of rocks create alignment and folding of crystals to give the illusion of “movement”.

This image was a finalist in the annual Smithsonian photo contest. It showcases an Octopus hitching a ride on the back of a Turtle in the waters off of Hawaii.

This is a picture of a bacterial community, taken by Eshel Ben-Jacob, who thinks bacteria are both the key to understanding complex biological systems and a source of incredible art. These bacteria, discovered by Ben-Jacob’s research team, self-organise into intricate and beautiful systems.

Cat skin

This image, captured from a Victorian microscope slide using polarised light microscopy shows, as the title reveals, cat skin and its blood supply. Fine hairs and thicker whiskers are shown in yellow while blood vessels are shown in black. More than 40 images were combined to produce the final colourful image.

A suspended atom
